Katsucon Day One - Cosplayers - Feb. 27, 1998
The love of anime and manga characters leads the most devoted fans to spend
hours working on costumes that let them break through the glass wall of
the TV screen and, for a few hours, become the characters.
It's a comfortable and entertaining experience for those who enjoy
this art form, but it's startling for the mainstream world. This author
followed a group of cosplayers up an escalator in the Radisson, and spotted
a business-suited diner in the hotel restaurant, jaws agape, as he watched
the costumed fans move through the building. Obviously, he hadn't seen
anything like it before and didn't know whether to believe it or not.
On Friday, Feb. 27 - one night before the official costume contest
- we strolled the halls of the Katsucon hotel and came up with these remarkable
sights.
