This isn't strictly part of anime and manga fandom, but it was a part
of Project: A-Kon 9 and deserves a look. Amtgard is one of the most fascinating
of the role-playing games that were part of A-Kon. Bacchus, leader of this
demonstration, said the game is a combination of military campaigning and
swordplay. |

These are the home-made weapons of Amtgard, plastic tubed wrapped in
padding that cost around $12 to make. They make a solid "whap" when they
strike home and can sting a little, but they're very lightweight. |

The game discourages deliberate shots to the head, groin or chest.
Connect at with your weapon on an opponent and you disable the body part
you hit. Players serve as their own referees during a joust, just as pickup
basketball players call fouls on each other. One rule: if you strike a
player's leg and the foot is on the ground, that's not scored as a major
hit. If the hoot is off the ground, the leg is disabled. |

Amtgard's swordplay is not like fencing. Jabs aren't as important as
broad slashes to the body. Strength isn't as important as speed, maneuverability
and a sense of when to strike for the opening. And, if handled properly,
no one gets hurt - although players who aim for the head can be excused
from a contest. |
