Anime conventions are held at hotels, and hotels are built near airports because that's where people go. The Harvey Hotel is across the highway from the Dallas-Fort Worth airport, and airliners using the north-south runway get this close to the hotel. |
A-Kon fans were enjoying the event's final panels and contests and rummaging through the dealer room when a strange sound blasted through the hotel. A fire alarm had been set off in one of the meeting rooms, and the building was evacuated as fire trucks rolled up. |
Hundreds of people had to wait in the muggy, 100-degree heat while hotel management and the Irving Fire Department checked the building. The evacuation never bothered the Amtgard players, who carried their duels into the parking lot - right behind a fire truck. |
Finally, the all-clear was given and the crowd shuffled back in. For reasons known only to Texans, many of the A-Kon fans made loud mooing sounds as if they were cattle being driven into a pen. |
