Anime Expo Day Three - Closing Ceremony - July 5, 1998

A remarkable 4,500 people (estimated) attended Anime Expo 98, and many of them were back in the main assembly hall at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sunday afternoon for the closing ceremony. They heard the conclusion of the joke started by Hiroyuki Kitakubo from the opening ceremony, when he said he had come to Anime Expo to conquer the universe. "I think I was successful just a little bit, and I have one subject now," he said, gesturing to the far end of the table on stage...
...where Yasuhiro Naito sat. He admitted that he was the "first subject," added he was pleased with the reception he receive at Anime Expo, and added that he was delighted with the looks of the female cosplayers, and was overwhelmed by the large portions served by American restaurants.
All of the Japanese guests of honor echoed Naito's delight at the reception they had received from American fans, and expressed wishes to be invited back to Anime Expo in 1999. Then, fan favorite Yu Watase filled in the right eye of the daruma doll to signify the successful completion of of a major endeavor, and the convention was over.
