The creator of A Distant Soil is an impressive comics storyteller, influenced by the manga style. But, Colleen Doran is a fine storyteller in the old-fashioned manner, and some of her best stories come from her unique life. Doran told fans at a Katsucon panel that she nearly chose a career in forensics, following the example of her parents who were police officers and criminal investigators. Doran tells some blood-curdling stories about the gory side of crime, and admits that the intensity of those stories can be found in her fiction. |
| What about the real-life drama played out on Katsucon weekend a few miles away, as the U.S. Senate refused to convict President Bill Clinton of the impeachment charges brought by the U.S. House? An unimpressive story, according to Doran. "It's too stupid - how could it be any funnier," she said. | ![]() |

Steve Pearl, the web page master, mailing list keeper and sometimes-anime
promoter, got together with members of the Atlantic Anime Alliance of clubs
that he heads. The alliance has members along the East Coast - and even
affiliates in Europe and Asia. Much of the alliance's work deals with distributing
fansubs made by its member clubs, although Pearl said the clubs have to
be careful they don't interfere with commercial releases.
He later added: "The purpose of the Alliance is to grow and promote
the member clubs. We help them get their fansubs to the other clubs but
that isn't the primary purpose. The purpose is to use the strength of 14
clubs
While the alliance has looked at holding their own anime convention, Pearl said that undertaking would be too much of a burden for them. |
| Video gaming is a big part of anime fandom - larger than most people acknowledge. And some of the biggest developments in anime (Sakura Taisen, for example) come first from games. Members of Satan City Productions got together to talk about game development. They spent a lot of time discussing games available overseas that haven't been released in the U.S., and the conversion of games from one platform to another. | ![]() |
