Project: A-Kon 10 - Voice Actors - June 5, 1999

What do you wear when you're acting out your fantasies? An anime character's costume? A favorite shirt or blouse? Nothing at all? If you believe some of the voice actors who appeared at an A-Kon panel on Saturday, you have to get naked to get convincing in an anime dub. On the panel were (left to right) Tiffany Grant, Brett Weaver, Jessica Calvello, Amy Howard and Tom Tweedy.
The "getting naked" talk came from Calvello, who has voiced Cutey Honey. It started when the actors talked about the physical gyrations they went through in the recording booth to generate a convincing performance. Calvello joked that when her character was naked and in pain, she had to feel what the character was feeling - so she got naked too (her clothes stayed on, but the feeling was still there, she said). The pain came from pulling her hair, to which Matt Greenfield of ADV Films, also in the room, said he had to keep Calvello from pulling all of her hair out during that recording session.
As far as we could tell, Brett Weaver keeps his clothes on in the booth, although his big character, Carrot Glace in Sorcerer Hunters, tries to get his clothes off with other women in that series. Rather, Weaver told about the benefits and pitfall of trying to use the original voice acting as a guide to his performance. The emotions expressed as great to listen to, he said, but the voice range can be a problem. As in grand opera, male anime heroes tend to have tenor voices, and his is pitched far lower at a bass-baritone.
Celebrating the first anniversary of her fan-produced Eva plug suit, a memento of her role as Asuka, Grant said aspiring voice actors need to be in the right place at the right time to get a role - literally in her case, since she lives in Texas where ADV Films has their headquarters. Some roles come from word of mouth, while others come from the newspaper - where ADV has advertised casting calls as they expand their production schedule.
