If you don't like anime dubs, consider this. At Otakon, dub actors
such as (left to right) Tiffany Grant, Amy Howard, Lisa Ortiz and Rachael
Lillis were scheduled to hold a 90-minute autograph session. At the end
of the hour and a half, dozens of fans remained in line, but the autograph
room was needed for another group of convention guests. To please the people
who wanted the actors' autographs, Otakon officials had to move the entire
autograph session downstairs to the main concourse, setting up tables and
chairs so that everyone who wanted an autograph got one. The actors were
more than happy to accommodate the fans. |

The women who handle so many of the dub roles were asked about the
favorite characters they've played. Lillis likes her best-known character,
Jessie of Team Rocket from Pokemon, a little better than Utena. Jessie
came in handy, with her loud ways, on the day that Lillis was frustrated
and angry because someone knocked her down on the New York City subway.
"It was nothing but non-stop yelling," she said about that day's recording
session. |

Howard's favorite role is her first, best and only anime role, Nova
from Star Blazers. At the panel discussion. She said that she wonders about
the content of some of the more anime intense anime recently released,
and wonder if it'll be toned down - or should be toned down. |

Then there's Tiffany Grant, who portrayed the pneumatic Madame President
in Golden Boy, and defends the role, saying it's not demeaning to women,
regardless of the character design. Komei in Blue Seed and and Chocolat
Misu in Sorcerer Hunters are other favorites, but Grant feels a special
affection for the bratty, yet complex Soryuu Asuka Langley in Neon Genesis
Evangelion. "It's a character I bonded with. It's like having a little
sister," she said. "There were so many levels of human emotion in Asuka." |

Ortiz said she likes Deedlit, the Lodoss Wars elf, and Lina Inverse
from Slayers - although Deedlit is "10,000,000 times more refined than
Lina." And there's the princess in Irresponsible Captain Tylor..."She's
got the pink hair I always wanted." The brown-haired Ortiz seems to like
characters for their hair colors as much as for their personalities. |
