Artist Noburo Ishiguro (left) received a surprise when he was called
to the stage during the opening ceremonies. He was named the honorary chairman
of Anime Expo for 1999. |
Wearing the black shirt is Yutaka Izubuchi,
mechanical designer for the Patlabor series, the Gundam series and the
television series Gasaraki. In the gray jacket is Yasuhito Kikuchi, director
of the Pretty Sammy OVAs, the first El Hazard television series and the
television series Kurogane Communication.
|
On the right is fan and cosplayer Walter Amos, famous for his Legend
of Galactic Heroes and one of the few costumers with the courage to play
a bad guy - and enjoy it. |
It shoud be no surprise that Toshi Yoshida from Viz Communications
and Scott Frazier, the most prominent American in the Japanese animation
industry, would find each other at the opening ceremonies. There was a flock
of costumers from the Ranma series published by Viz in the halls. |
In the white T-shirt is Akio Takami. His most
recent work was as character designer and animation director for the Steam
Detectives television series. Previously, Takami worked on Bakuretsu/Sorcerer
Hunters, Dancougar, Sonic Soldier Borgman, M.D. Geist, Patlabor and Martian
Successor Nadesico. We've already met Kikuchi... |
...but we haven't met long-time anime and sci-fi fan Fred Patten, one
of the grand old men of anime fandom, seen here on the left talking with
Santoso. Patten has memories of anime fandome going back 20 years, when
the first wave of videotapes came to the use and the old Comic/Fantasy
Organization was born (Patten still wears a C/FO pin). |
