Canadian National Anime Expo - Voice Stars of Sailor Moon

The voice actors for the English-language version of Sailor Moon come from Canada. Making an appearance in Toronto were (left to right) Roland Parliament, director and occasional actor; Toby Proctor, voice of Tuxedo Mask; Robert Tinkler, who portrays Rubeus; Stephanie Morgenstern, who is Sailor Venus' voice; and Tracey Hoyt, who gives Rini her voice. Sailor Moon has been more popular in Canada than in the U.S., and the fans in Toronto squealed with delight as the actors recreated their favorites lines and battle cries.
While Sailor Moon stays current on TV through syndication and cable, the actors had not worked on the program for several years...until the summer.
The English-language cast was brought back to the recording studio to dub the soundtrack for three Sailor Moon movies. Those films may be released as home videos in North America, the actors said. Hoyt said she had spent the week before the convention working on the movies, "screaming like Rini for hours."
"It's so goofy and over the top," Morgenstern said about dubbing anime into English. "It's not the kind of thing where you stay up all night and wonder how it's going to come out." Sailor Venus isn't the only voice that Morgenstern provides. She'll be Marigold in Watership Down and Regina in the Dino Crisis game for the Sony Playstation. For that game role, "I spent two-and-a-half days `dying' in every conceivable combination of pain" to provide the sounds for the possible fates of the Dino Crisis character.
Like many of the actors in the Sailor Moon case, Tinkler started young. "I was a yeller when I was a kid. I never thought I would get into this kind of thing," he said.
Proctor said he was first on stage when he was eight years old. A girl - who looked to be eight - asked Proctor if it was romantic to play Tuxedo Mask because he got to kiss Serena/Usagi a lot. Proctor had to break the news to the fan: no romance involved because the actors record their lines separately - and it's not unusual for an actor not to see the rest of the voice cast for weeks. While "It's very cool to be Darien," Proctor said "You have to build a relationship with people who aren't there."
Parliament topped all of the cast members when he said he had first been on stage when he was two years old. The gray hair hints that's he not that young any more...and probably the oldest of the group.
