Nan Desu Kon - Day One Highlights

This page has a reputation of generating straitlaced, never-crack-a-smile, serious stories on panel discussions at anime conventions (except for the time that actor Jessica Calvello joked about getting naked during a recording session). That attitude went by the wayside during the "metaphorical panel" concocted by Becca Norman of Nan Desu Kon. It was a variation on the old "what kind of tree" questions that Barbara Walters made (in)famous. Animator Scott Frazier didn't know what to expect as he crept into the panel room...
...especially when actor Amanda Winn Lee was asked what kind of drink she would be. "I would be a Russian creme soda," she answered. An astonished Frazier, when asked if he had ever done anything ridiculous for love, admitted that he had bicycled in a driving Japanese rainstorm to get his wife some peanut butter to make cookies - and came down with pneumonia.
Actor Talisen Jaffe (left) said he did something almost as bad as Frazier's efforts, getting himself soaked in a wool cloak for a woman's sake. And one of the women in the panel audience was impressed with game designer Mark Baldwin (right), shouting "I'll take him!" when another question was asked.
When Matt Greenfield of ADV Films was asked what he would do if space aliens invaded, he replied "Try to negotiate a deal for them to buy Evangelion." Of course, ADV had the rights to the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, but Manga Entertainment got the rights to the Eva movies.
Finally, actor Scott Simpson said that he wanted to see a series of action figures for movies that never had action figures: films like On the Waterfront, The Godfather ("real skull-cracking action," he promised), Pretty Woman (Amanda Lee suggested a Julia Roberts figure with "real knee-bending action") and Altered States (Scott wants an action figure of a transforming William Hurt).
