Katsucon Friday - Surviving A Convention

In the middle of this site's pictures and stories on the costumers and guests at an anime convention, it might seem unusual to find a couple of people talking about how not to hurt yourself at an event. However, that's what Katsucon staffers Kayt Robarts (left) and Collette Fozard (right) did on Friday evening, just before the opening ceremonies. It helped show that con staff does have the best interest of the fans in mind.

The advice was simple: don't spend so much time having fun that you forget to eat, sleep or bathe. "Lather. rinse, repeat" is a phrase Robarts uses a lot at conventions. The food (and the sleep) keeps fans from keeling over in the middle of the day (look for food in the con suite, she said). The water keeps fans from getting dehydrated (and the hotel had several water stations on each floor). Drinking often applies to water and not alcohol, Robarts added.

Along with the take-care advice came a recommendation to have some fun. "If it looks interesting, give it a try," Fozard said. "Soon we'll have program books so you can see how interesting they are." (The Katsucon program guide was delayed at the printer and didn't arrive at the hotel until Friday night.)

These staffers speak from experience, doing things right and wrong. Robarts began attending anime cons at the defunct Anime East in 1995, went to the second Katsucon, started working at conventions when she was employed by Studio Ironcat, and has staffed several events since then. Fozard went to sci-fi cons for four years before she started working at them, being asked by Katsucon chair Keith Mayfield to work at this event.
