Anime Central - Day Three - Jessica Calvello

Jessica Calvello had never been to an anime convention before Project: A-Kon in 1999. Now, the voice of Mink, Cutey Honey, Princess Minerva and Yuri from Dirty Pair is planning to get to as many conventions as she can attend. She loves the attention she gets from the fans. "These conventions are great for my ego," she said. An actor is constantly beat up - it's hard to get work and you don't get paid much. When you get to go where you're appreciated, it's beyond a treat."

Calvello has done lots of anime dub roles, but she's still one of the thousands of actors who need to have other jobs to make ends meet. Working at trade shows, handing out samples, making coffee for "mean lawyers," helping as a caterer, temporary office work - all of that is part of Calvello's life between acting jobs. "There are so many people in this business that the chances of making it are not good, so we need other jobs," said Calvello. A lot of my friends will work graveyard shifts...there's a joke: `You're an actor? Where do you wait on tables?' "

Calvello has a long list of acting projects in the works. She's voicing an online animated series called Battleseed, has done a voice on Pokemon, is working on three childrens' theater shows, sings on a forthcoming soundtrack for a musical about Princess Diana, and is working on another musical based on the works of Tennessee Williams. In the meantime, Calvello has done small stuff like working as an extra in a filmed subway scene that needed people to walk up and down stairs. And there's her continuing dream to one day play Fanny Brice in Funny Girl.

While Calvello's first love is acting, her second love is teaching elementary school classes - something she did in Houston before she moved to New York City. "I'm really comfortable with elementary level kids. It's like being at a recording session. I can be having a bad day, go to a recording session and I feel great. It's the same when I teach."
