Project: A-Kon - Saturday - Senno Knife and Nekoi
Senno Knife's manga have recently gotten attention in the U.S. through the publication of titles like Valkyr and Sepia from Studio Ironcat - but that material is said to be far from the most intense artwork and story telling he has produced. Knife's horror manga has a large fan following in Japan (much of it female, he says), and much of the credit must go to his wife, Nekoi, also an artist (and a rock musician).
Knife first thinks up his stories (gathering some of the plot ideas from movies he sees and games he plays). Then he tells the ideas to his wife to find what she thinks. "Instead of talking to an editor, it's better to talk to her first. She comes up with a lot of ideas," he said. "It's a team thing," she added. Nekoi's influence is one of the ways that Knife keeps from repeating stories without realizing what he's doing. Knife also tries to remember old plots to he doesn't recycle them into new stories.
While sex and horror are Knife's artistic specialities, he doesn't mix those genres in his titles. "Readers of the adult manga don't like to see someone killed," Knife said.
