Project: A-Kon - Sunday - Tiffany Vollmer
You won't often hear the name of actor Carol Burnett mentioned in connection with anime dubbing, but that name was brought up when Tiffany Vollmer briefly chatted about her work as the latest English-language voice of Bulma in the Dragon Ball Z anime. Bulma is stranded by herself on a planet in the first episodes voiced by Vollmer, and there's as much screaming and moaning as dialogue in those episodes. Vollmer said her voice director told her she had to "Carol Burnett-it" when she made those noises, in the the style of the veteran actor. "It was so easy," Vollmer said.
We'll, maybe not so easy on the throat...because those screams are at full voice. And maybe not so easy when the dialogue arrives, because there are subtle differences in the writing style from episode to episode. When Vollmer has trouble with a particular line of dialogue, "Sometimes they well me to go take a break and try again." A-Kon was the first anime convention for most of the Dragon Ball Z cast, based in Funimation's home state of Texas, and Vollmer said "It's so new to me - it's exciting at this point." She also found that there are a lot of convention fans who want to become voice actors: get some acting training if you want this job, she suggested.
