Anime Expo - Friday - Kazuto Nakazawa
|
 |
Character designer Kazuto Nakazawa (right, with a
translator on the left)) might have been joking when he said at an Anime
Expo panel discussion that he moved into the anime industry because he
was lazy. "I was told that animators can sleep in as much as you want.
The flip side is that you can never go home, no matter how late it gets
at night," Nakazawa said. Many of his late nights during his career
have been spent putting together the characters for the El-Hazard series. |
 |
On the other hand, Nakazawa is working on something
more commercial, the Digimon movie (on which he was working two days before
the convention). And Nakazawa is trying to put together a new project with
frequent collaborator and director Hiroyuki Kitakubo. Video game work?
"If there's an offer and it pays well, I'll take the job." he said. |
 |
On the growing computerization of anime production,
Nakazawa said "I have a personal preference for film. I feel that film
has more realism right now." Fans wanted to know why one of his character
designs is of a cat that transformed into a suit of armor (the director
wanted that) and why the teachers in two of the series on which he has
drawn characters look the same (it's because Nakazawa wanted that). |
 |
Nakazawa was asked another fan question: what does
he think about the plot and censorship changes often made in anime for
U.S. TV release? "Is that what they're doing? I don't think that's right,"
he responded to applause. |
