Anime Expo - Friday - Cosplay Makeup
|
 |
It's said that the most-ignored parts of anime costuming
are shoes and makeup - because costumers figure no one ever will look at
their feet or their faces. Ann McCreery disagrees with that approach, and
she arranged for a makeup panel at Anime Expo to get her point across. |
 |
McCreery wanted costumers to know that makeup is
a big factor of costuming, and not just for the occasional scar worn by
fighting characters. Makeup evens out a character's appearance and keeps
faces from looking washed out and flat - even for dark-skinned costumers
who figure they don't need to work on their faces. |
 |
To demonstrate, McCreery brought a makeup kit to
the panel and brought up volunteers for instant makeovers. A few minutes
with foundation and blush highlights helped bring out the shapes of the
costumers' faces and made them look more convincing. McCreery noted that
basic makeup is adequate for hall costuming, but more elaborate presentations
are needed for stage appearances. |

Among the most noted practitioners of costume makeup
are the Japanese costumers seen at Anime Expo, who wear heavy layers of
makeup that are so carefully crafted that fans don't recognize the women
when they're out of costume. |
