Anime Expo - Saturday - New Generation Pictures

Only a handful of American anime companies produce
and distribute shows in the U.S. Most turn over the dubbing and subbing
to a specialty company. New Generation Pictures is one of those companies;
they handle many of Pioneer's titles. On hand at Anime Expo from New Generation
were (left to right) Taliesin Jaffe, actor and director; Reiko Matsuo,
company president; Jonathan Klein, production supervisor, Greg Weisman,
actor and director; and Bret Jacobsen, subtitle supervisor. |

How do Ed Asner and Gargoyles fit into all of this?
That explanation came after Matsuo told how she wanted the company at first
to produce live action movies, but they went in the direction of anime
with an attempt to handle the Galaxy Express 999 movie. While that deal
fell through, it led to other anime titles - and the link with Urban Vision,
for which New Generation has produced Golgo 13, and Pioneer, for which
they did 3x3 Eyes, Nazca and the new Amazing Nurse Nakano... |

...for which Jaffe directed the dub. "I was just
baffled by it. It's the X-Files meets Baywatch. Take Scully, put her in
a bikini, dumb her down a bit and you've got it," he said about the comedy
featuring a mad scientist, a giant robot and a nurse with an independently-animated
bosom. The audience at the panel was howling with laughter at the preview
of the dub. |

Weisman got the privilege to finish some unfinished
business for anime fans with the relaunch of 3x3 Eyes, the series which
was started by Orion, then dropped before all of the episodes were released
in the U.S. The New Generation version of 3x3 Eyes (to be released by Pioneer)
has a fresh dub cast and soundtrack. "I think we managed to capture the
real flavor and spirit of the Japanese as well as we could, and to make
it ready for an american audience," he said. Sharp-eared fans will hear
voices from the Gargoyles TV cast in 3x3 Eyes (including Bridgette Bako
as Pai), along with veteran actor Ed Asner in a supporting role as Pai's
grandfather. |
