Anime Iowa - Friday - Studio Ironcat
Here's one of the big changes ahead for Studio Ironcat, courtesy of Kintaro Oe (or at least the man who played his voice on TV). Doug Smith, the graphics designer who was drafted into acting duty for the Golden Boy series when he worked for ADV Films in Texas, has moved to Virginia to work for Ironcat and will design the publisher's covers. At left is the first release of the Futaba-Kun Change graphic novel from Ironcat, and on the right is the new version designed by Smith from Hiroshi Aro's original artwork.
Another name familiar to fans is going to be working with Ironcat. After years of talking about it, Robert DeJesus is finally going to create something for Ironcat. Dejesus has spent recent years making cover art for magazines and has created several portfolios, but he hasn't made a huge output of comics art - until the upcoming Ironcat project. No one is certain what that project of "something" is going to be. It might be a parody of anime conventions...or it might be something like a Comic Market-style doujinshi, with fan art mixed in among whatever DeJesus and Bennett create.
But the most intriguing announcement from Steve Bennett of Ironcat was that his company is going to publish translated manga for two U.S. anime importers. Ironcat will handle manga of the anime titles released by those companies. One company is ADV Films, Bennett said on Friday at AnimeIowa, and the other company won't be announced until the contract is completed. Also, the titles to be published haven't been determined yet. "With our quality and our work and our dedication, we'll put it out," said Bennett.
Ironcat still plans to revise previously published books with new cover art and improved translations, said Bennett. Among those revisions will be the Ogenki Clinic adult title. "There are still a few things we'll have to be careful about that are permissible in Japan," he said, but the new Ogenki translation will be closer to the original Japanese than the first edition from Ironcat. Bennett also noted the release of the Vampire Princess Yui graphic novel.
