You can expect two rituals at the opening ceremony of Anime Weekend Atlanta.
First comes the throwing of candy into the crowd, here handled by convention
officials Dave Merrill (left) and Joe Vecchio (right) |

Then, Merrill presides over the burning of a card from Magic: the Gathering,
a way of remembering the time when Magic players cost the convention extra
money by using a room the convention didn't think they were using. |

After the introduction of the convention's senior staff, including Lloyd
Carter, it's time to meet the celebrity guests. |

They started with Steve Bennett of Studio Ironcat, who seemed in good spirits
despite losing his father to cancer the previous week. |

Then actor Michael Brady took to the stage and snapped a digital souvenir
of the ceremony's audience. |

Actor Jessica Calvello had fans screaming in delight - or disbelief - when
she told the famed - or infamous - chocolate milk joke. We'll see more
of Calvello later on. |
