 3x3 Eyes has
been on home video for a few years in North America, but it's re-emerging
in a fresh dub from New Generation Pictures, the same company that handled
Amazing Nurse Nananko and just finished the first episodes of the Nia Under
Seven series before Fanime Con. The creative team of the 3x3 Eyes dub are

 How much of
the original intent of the Japanese did the 3x3 Eyes dubbers use? Jaffe
said they tried to follow the meaning of the voices along with the dialogue.
"We took accents and dialogue from the Japanese, looked at how they were
speaking, and tried to not come up with a literal translation," he said.
"We were trying to find words that had the same meaning and flavor in Japanese." |
 Pai is the
key figure in 3x3 Eyes, and a difficult character to write for an cast.
On her dialogue, Klein noted that "Pai speaks a broken Japanese, and we
wanted to keep that flavor in the English language version." Finding the
right actor for the part was more difficult because of Pai's split personality
- one moment a bubbly teen, the next moment a domineering woman. for the
new version, New Generation found one actor to handle those different personalities,
where the previous dub used two actors. |
 To Weisman,
3x3 Eyes is much more than the story of a zombified teen fighting monsters
for his semi-alien girlfriend; it's a deeply human story. "An important
theme was the friendship and loyalty between the characters," he said.
Still, there were some interesting word games used to show the relationships
and the nature of the characters. In a scene where Yakumo described his
friends, Weisman chose to have him use the word "gang" to describe his
acquaintances, and Pai picks up "gang" to be a synonym for "friend." That
touch is intended to tell as much about Pai as about Yakumo, said Weisman. |
