There's no
denying the popularity of Sailor Moon at anime conventions. Just look at
the number of women of all ages who wear Sailor Moon costumes. One of the
most colorful groups of organized Sailor Moon costumers is Sailor JAMboree.
On Sunday they appeared at Fanime Con in what they called "enameled fruity
hot pants suits," based on the outfits that the Sailor Senshi wore when
they entered a music contest. But JAMboree bases their best-known costumes
on outfits that usually are seen only in Japan. |
Tristen Citrine
was one of the JAMboree group that spoke about the Sailor Moon musicals
in Japan. these stage shows feature singing and dancing characters from
the TV show, performing new stories you'd never see on TV. There's the
example of the musical where Sailor Moon meets Dracula. "in the fist act
the vampires bite the Sailor Senshi and they become evil," she said. "It's
a lot darker than the anime - there are a lot of gothic things going on."
They're great entertainment, even if they don't make sense to some people.
When Citrine saw a musical in Japan, she asked a friend what was happening,
and he didn't know. |
Inspired by
Sailor JAMboree, there's another group of fans who are forming their own
Sailor Moon costuming group. They're calling themselves Senshi Mysterious,
and they have members scattered around the U.S., aged 13 to 45. Senshi
Mysterious made an appearance at the Fanime Con costume contest, and they
had to overcome some problems with the sound system. That denied the group
the chance to use one of the first "all your base are belong to us" jokes
on a cosplay stage. But they weren't upset; Senshi Mysterious thinks that
costumers have to adjust to whatever happens. |
