Fanime Con got of to a Friday morning start, featuring a lineup of the senior staff and a recitation of the history of the con, which started as an anime club get-together and grew to fill a hotel.

When came the guests of honor, starting with Usagi Yojimbo creator Stan Sakai. "I very rarely go to anime conventions, but this is something special," he said.

Singer and songwriter Mari Iijima was next, fresh from a recording session for her new album. "This is like my home town - I love Fanime Con," she said.

Director and writer Greg Weisman said "I'm kind of an anime virgin," referring to his work on the new dub of the 3x3 Eyes series for New Generation Pictures. He's also known for creating the now-defunct Gargoyles animation.

Librarian and writer Gilles Poitras asked the first-time convention goers at the opening ceremonies to stand, and was impressed by the number of people at their first con.

Hiroyuki Yamaga of Gainax said he was writing scripts for new shows and wanted California fans to ask him about that work - and he brought FLCL videos, too.
