Actor Mamiko
Noto looks and speaks like a cute young Japanese woman, and her anime voice
roles seem to be cute young women - among then Yoshiko Yamada in the new
Tenchi Muyo GXP series and Rin in Inu-Yasha. But she looks at herself in
a different way than others. "It's fun to be a young and cute character
It's just so fascinating to be so cute - which I don't think I am." And
her most difficult roles are those where she has to create a personal different
from her own nature. "An aggressive or outgoing character, that's a challenge,"
she said.
So why did
Noto decide to become an actor? Credit Tasuya Nakadami, who appeared in
Akira Kurosawa movies. "I went to see him act on the stage and that inspired
me, that this was what I want to do...it was real interesting for me. I
wanted to experience what it was like to be a different person." After
high school, Noto went to an acting school, then was fortunate enough to
get roles in anime productions, which isn't automatic in a crowded and
competitive field.
Noto had to
start her career by auditioning for roles, but in recent productions, the
anime companies have asked for her when they're casting roles. Her secret
in getting the voices just right for her roles is to look at the character
designs as much as the scripts, to figure how the character should sound.
If voice actors in Japan seem to be bigger stars than those in the U.S.,
she thinks that's because there are more animated shows and more actors
to draw attention from fans.
