Otakon continues its tradition of changing convention chairs each season.
Sue Monroe, mother of two young anime fans, serves at the 2002 chair.
Translator Neil Nadelman kicked off the parade of guests of honor.
"I seem to specialize in bad anime, but none from the people I work for,
he joked."
Next came writer Gilles Poitras, the writer who is director of
information resources at the
Exploratorium in California. "There's a good way to save money on your
anime purchases: hook your parents," said the man who has used anime and
manga to encourage students to read.
Scott Frazier, who has lived in much of Southeast Asia, noted that
he was now living in the Baltimore area.
Steve Bennett of Studio Ironcat said he remembered the early days of
Otakon, with a handful of fans and even fewer costumers.
Doug Smith, Ironcat artist and actor, said it turned out that he was
going to be the only actor at the convention, since Wendee Lee was out
with a broken leg, of all things.
Lianne Sentar, who got cheers for her authorship of Sailor Moon novels,
said she wanted "handsome male costumers from Fushigi Yuugi" to attend
her writing panel.
