A
ticked-off Hamster, a Gundam Wing pilot with problems and a egotistic high
school student - these roles make up some of the accomplishments of Ted Cole,
and he shared his insights with Anime Boston fans on the convention's first
day. Because of all of the cartoon voices he's played, Cole needed a little
prompting to recall the loner Wu Fei. "I know he lost his wife but couldn't
he just go out with Relena? He's angst ridden - that's what's fun with
these characters. They can't get over their lost loves, it's very romantic."
Cole said he played Wu Fei as someone who was always trying to break into
the circle of the other Gundam Wing pilots, a person who was too intense
over winning all the time.
Then
there's Kuno, the Ranma 1/2 high school student who was comically full of
himself, a role that was one of Cole's favorites. "He thinks he's the greatest
thing in the world, but he always gets his face stomped. I thought the bigger
and more arrogant I could make him, the bigger his downfall would be." That's
a long way from the portrayal of Boss in Hamtaro. "I think he's such a grouchy
character and a funny guy, and I like the show. The engineers and the producers
aren't afraid to throw in references from Star Wars and Gilligan's Island.
It's for younger audiences, but it's fun."
Cole's
done American-style animation acting, where the voice tracks are recorded
and the animation set to those tracks, and anime dubbing which is "...it's
very isolated. We're alone in a booth and we have a television set and a
script. Sometimes (another actor's) performance will have been recorded before
you, so you can listen to the question. Sometimes you're responding to a
question that hasn't been recorded yet. I'm amazed at how cohesive the episodes
sound, so some of the dialogue really meshes together."
