Did
playing Brutus in Julius Caesar prepare Monica Rial for the role of Kirika
in Noir? No, the question doesn't make sense...until you understand that
the actor played the conspiring Roman senator in an all-female production
of the Shakespeare play. Maybe there is a link between the man who wanted
to rule Rome and the teenaged assassin. "(Actor) Chris Patton will tell you
I have a mean streak in me, that I'm the sweetest person until you cross
me," Rial said. "Brutus was a tough chick, but I don't think anything prepared
me for Kirika. When she took the guy by the tie and threw him over the rafter
and hung him, I thought `What are you getting me into?' We just finished
volume five (of Noir) and she grows with every volume - she gets really crazy."
Rial
does most of her dubbing work for ADV Films. "At ADV they are definitely
actors' directors. They will never say `Hey Monica, say the line like this.'
They respect the actor, and (figure that) that if you tell me that I have
to go from point A to point B I can work it out. Part of the fun is to get
a role that starts out like this and ends like this and you have to figure
out how to get there. Matt (Greenfield, producer) is pretty good
about leading me in the right direction without telling me what is going
to happen. If you were an director who wanted to lead me through a role,
that could happen but usually they give me the reins. Yay!"
Rial's
performances as Kirika in Noir and Hyatt in Excel Saga play her against type:
she has a screeching voice which can frustrate recording engineers, but can
modulate that voice to a soothing tone. "That was the first time i got a
compliment that my voice was so soothing," said Rial about her Excel Saga
role. "My family would hit them in the head because i'm so loud." But soothing
sells, and it's led Rial to a busy "role" as the voice of the Anime Network,
ADV's cable TV service. On the day before she traveled to Anime Central,
Rial recorded 90 minutes of promos for the network.
