The
last time this site saw Duel Jewel, they were dressed in hyper-bishonen business
suits. For their Sunday panel at Anime Central, the quintet turned up in
full visual kei regalia. That garb delighted the crowd of fans, mostly female,
who squealed and screamed when the group emerged for their last-day appearance.
The fans peppered the group with questions like how tall they were (5'6"
- 6'0") the other groups they liked (Dir en Grey, Luna Sea, X-Japan
and Linkin Park) and how old they were - "Teenager," replied one band member,
to which a fan said "I thought they were 20" and the band said "You're so
nice."
Shun,
on the left, said he "...played a lot of instruments when I was young and
one day I had a guitar in my hand." His favorite anime is Gundam, since he
has a friend who is a big giant robot otaku. Yuya used to watch Dragon Ball,
and said he started playing the guitar "because it looked so damn cool...I've
been listening to a lot of visual kei since I was in school...artists like
luna sea are the ones that influenced me." The band was asked what sort of
food they liked (mostly Japanese food) while one fan wanted to know if they
liked pickles. One band member said he would have McDonald's take the pickles
off his sandwiches, then found his mother made pickles and he had to eat
them. "I eat pickles for breakfast, lunch and dinner," replied another band
member.
Everyone
if the band was born in Tokyo, but they like different anime. Hayato said
he liked Akira, and "...now what i watch is Ranma 1/2." Answered Natski,
"Ever since I was in middle school I liked Evangelion," and Val said "I really
liked Hayao Miyazaki and my favorite is Laputa." Natski said "I played piano
since I was little and than a friend dragged me into a band. Of all the instruments,
bass guitar was the most satisfying." When Val said he got into J-rock because
he was popular, Hayato said "Are you popular?" Hayato added that "I'm very
happy that there are a lot of American fans. I get to meet more fans around
the world and that motivates us to work really hard," a statement that brought
a cheer from the crowd.
