Sakura Con - Hillary Haag - 2003
Hillary Haag has roles in two of ADV Films' fan favorite series in 2003, and those roles couldn't be more different. One isn't human and the other doesn't speak much. In Excel Saga, Haag voices the dog Menchi. Haag was one of several actors who auditioned for the role, and she was surprised when she got the part. "I asked Matt (Greenfield, ADV director) `You cast me as a dog?' He said, `Everybody likes the dog, trust me,' and it must have worked because more people have asked me about Menchi than any other human roles I've done." ADV revoiced Menchi and the alien Puu Chuus for Excel Saga because the sound tracks the company got from Japan didn't have those voices, she said.
The dub sessions for Excel Saga were completed before Sakura Con was held, so Haag was jumping at convention time into another fan favorite role, Chloe in Noir. "Chloe is hard because its not the usual type of role," Haag explained. Chloe doesn't say much, and in many of her scenes her mouth is hidden by the collar of her cloak. Having no lip flaps to match makes Haag's dubbing job a little easier, but the hard part comes with finding Chloe's personality and getting the performance just right. "I'm having trouble grasping her. She's a psycho assassin...she's just very expressionless. Every now and then she has that little evil look so that helps you express yourself that way."
Like most voice actors, Haag has a day job to support her. After selling computer payroll services all day, she rushes to ADV to record for another half-day. I like it. It's a creative outlet for me. I refuse to give it up," Haag said about acting. "I'm not the type who likes to sit around an office, but you can spend only a few hours a day in a studio." Haag pursued an acting career for a couple of years in Los Angeles, and she's tempted to try it again. "I wish I could quit and make a living at voice acting," she said.
