Camino
makes big sounds onstage, but they're quiet and shy when they meet
their fans. From left to night they're guitarist Kiku, drummer Rehit,
singer Jun, bassist Taka and keyboard player Ryosuke. Their audience at
this Friday A-Kon panel sounded different than the groups that gather
for others at conventions; the mostly female audience had a
high-pitched sound as they giggled at every answer given by the band
members. The musicians said they enjoyed American audiences and their
free, open enthusiasm, and liked that the U.S. didn't have the Japanese
custom of taking off shoes to enter a room. Rehit said "I've started to
like hamburgers," But they didn't appreciate the standard American
custom against smoking in most public places.
Camino's
members are fans of anime series such as Tiger Mask and Sailor Moon.
They came out of high school clubs - anime, music and basketball - to
form their group. Why would these guys want to form a band? "To be
famous," said Kiku, and Rehit said "Me, too." Taka said "Kiku called me
into this," and Ryosuke said he got into the band "...to drink with
Kiku." It wouldn't be worth the effort if they couldn't play the music
they want to play, and the band said anyone who wants to make music
should have the same goal. They're comfortable with playing both big
and small halls, although some of the band members said they'd love to
see Madison Square Garden in New York - would they be dreaming of
playing there? The band does like the curvier shape of U.S. females.
If
they weren't in the band, what would Camino's member's do? Kiku would
be a sports referee, Rehit would be a manga writer, Jun would work at a
cake shop, Taka would work in a video shop and Ryosuke would be a
firefighter. When they're not playing and rehearsing, they watch ESPN
and play video games. The band members said their shows take a lot of
practice, and their music takes a lot of experience with their
instruments - a minimum of eight years experience, according to the
band. They mention Michael Jackson and Metallica as influences,
although one Camino member said he was inspired to become a musician by
listening to the music played at wrestling matches. One fan even asked
the band about their religion, to which Ryosuke responded, "Kiku is my
religion."
