Yes.
that is a beard sported by Fred Gallagher at Katsucon. The leader of
the Megatokyo web comic universe had that surprise for a room full of
Piro and Seraphim fans, but nothing else was a surprise. Sheer empathy
with the audience drives Megatokyo's stories and appeal, and Gallagher
showed that when he chatted with the Friday audience which claims the
artist as one of their own. Megatokyo's popularity means it reigns
among manga-influenced web comics, but Gallagher doesn't come close to
bragging about his work. The closest to a boast you would have found at
the Friday appearance came when a fan noted that lots of fans follow
the web links that Gallagher lists in his daily notes; Gallagher
replied, jokingly, "I take great pleasure in taking down random
Japanese web sites."
Piro
is considered a thinly disguised avatar for Gallagher, and he told the
fans how his "disastrous life" leads to Megatokyo stories. "As long as
I keep feeling pain, I'll make sure that others keep feeling it, too."
When a female fan said that her husband had introduced her to
Megatokyo, and her response was to read it for hours on end, Gallagher
joked that "It could be considered grounds for divorce." And Gallagher
admitted that his wonderful character drawings still have one big place
to improve; they're in black and white, he said, because he doesn't
have a good color sense. Gallagher said that he'd love to have
Yoshitoshi Abe (Serial Experiments Lain artist) color his work, saying
"There's a guy that makes me want to put my hands in a food processor -
maybe a blender."
