Nearly
six years have passed since the Trigun anime, based on Yasuhiro
Nightow's manga, had one of its first North American showings at Anime
Expo. That show has had a permanent impact on anime fans, with dozens
of Vash costumers populating conventions around the continent. At the
inaugural Pacific Media Expo, Nightow recalled how he was nervous about
Trigun's chances among English-speaking fans. "At first, I really
didn't think that Americans would accept this," said Nightow at an
interview session. "Vash is a character who tries to solve things
peacefully instead of by brash actions. I'm glad that they accepted him
- I'm always writing these comics to answer these questions about who
is Vash." Is Nightow secretly Vash? "I do have a part like Vash; it's
the same for all of my characters. Either they're part of me, or they
have the same feelings as me, or they're like a person I respect.
There's always a little taste of myself in all of the characters I
write."
Nightow
was a childhood fan of Getter Robo and the Go Nagai giant robot shows.
Later, he gave up a salaryman's life to pursue his doujonshi-fueled
hopes of manga success, and progressed from work on Samurai Showdown to
the start of his Trigun a few years later. His stories are written with
himself in mind first. "I try to write things that will please me. I
also try to write stuff that fans will like and that I also will like.
I would choose not to write something if it doesn't agree with me, even
if the fans like it." Manga editors have a major voice in the
buisiness, but Nightow dounds satisfied with his immediate supervisor.
My editor is also a really hot anime fan, so whatever I write, he likes
it too." That editor must have amazingly good taste: Nightow said he's
the same editor who handles the manga versions of Excel Saga and
Hellsing.
Nightow
won't mention his next project, saying it's a big secret. He will talk
about his storytelling ideas. "For a good story, I think you have to
think really hard and put all of your soul into it - that makes a good
story. I think it's important when I'm writing a scenario, I need to
put in specifc elements that lead to a climax." How to make a
villian? I try to make the villain hot, but I also try to make
the hero outshine the villian."
