Here
they are, together for the first time in Colorado, making an exclusive
appearance direct from the dominion of Canada, it's the three Dobson
brothers. Brian, on the left, is the youngest; Michael, in the middle,
is the oldest, and Paul, on the right, is the middle brother. They're
among the busiest of the Vancouver troupe of voice actors, appearing in
anime dubs and original animation. They often appear on the same shows.
And even though they have to compete with each other for the same
roles, they stay close and aren't like the families where siblings grow
apart when they grow up. Chat with the Dobsons and you understand why
they've stayed so close, and how their vocation broke up what seemed to
be a family tradition.
As
older brother Michael tells it, the Dobson father was an aviation
electronics technician. A life in avionics can mean a good career, but
only as long as the aviation industry is strong. The cyclical, boom and
bust nature of aviation meant the Dobson family always was on the move
when the brothers were growing up, as their father went from job to
job. The brothers said that as soon as they got settled in one place,
it seemed as if it was time to move down the road. With no real roots
and constant friends, the Dobson brothers had to depend on each other.
That may help explain why they all became voice actors; Michael, the
oldest brother, started acting and working as a disc jockey first, and
the younger brothers followed suit. It's said that all three of the
Dobsons were disc jockeys at one point, and they're known for their
dependable work in Vancouver's studios.
But
that family acting tradition might have been an aviation tradition had
Michael Dobson turned in another direction. While he loves acting,
Michael Dobson's first love was aviation. Longer before the older of
the Dobson brothers broke into acting, he wanted to be a pilot. While
his father worked on electronics systems for fighter planes, Michael
wanted to be one of the pilots, viewing jet fighters as the ultimate
hot rod for a young man. Instead, the Dobsons turned toward acting,
something that they all say "just happened." Michael Coleman admits
that his father was disappointed at first that his sons make a living
as actors rather than in the aviation business, but all of the Coleman
brothers seem pleased with their career decisions. After all, people
would rather have their pictures taken with actors than with avionics
engineers.
