Writer
Marv Wolfman has been involved in some of the comic industry's biggest
retcons and reinventions. He turned Superman nemesis Lex Luthor from a
standard criminal into a crooked businessman, was one of the writers on
Crisis on Infinite Earths, and created the Blade character that has
been the focus of three movies. But most anime fans didn't know
Wolfman's work until he started writing episodes and creating
characters for the anime-flavored Teen Titans animated series that has
found success on the Cartoon Network. "They wanted to do a lighter,
more fun approach to the Titans than with Batman or Superman,"
Wolfman said at an Anime Overdose panel. "And since Glen (a producer)
really loves that (anime) style and wanted to do something more over
the top, and since Sam Register (of the Cartoon Network) wanted to do
something different, that's how it came over that way." Much the same
thing happened with the Puffy AmiYumi theme for the cartoon series.
Register had heard the Japanese girl band's music before but didn't
learn their names until he heard them on the radio around the same time
that Teen Titans was in pre-production.
There
have been several versions of the Teen Titans universe over the years.
The comics version was the basis for the animation, but the cable TV
version was so different from the comics that DC created a new comics
line that matched the TV series' designs and stories. The comic was
written for high school through college and up. The cartoon is written
for a younger audience, but since it has a lot of wit, it appeals to
older audiences." Teen Titans' anime look doesn't extend to its writing
in one sense; while animated series of that type follow story arcs,
Teen Titans is written to the old concept of having stand-alone
episodes with little continuity between shows. The series also picks
and chooses characters and villains from assorted portions of the DC
universe. Regardless, Teen Titans' simplified character designs are
finding favor with costumers, as Wolfman discovered when he traveled to
the previous weekend's MegaCon in Florida. "There were three or four
Ravens, one who was both as Light Raven and a Dark Raven - they were
really cute. I love it - I just think it's absolutely wonderful."
Wolfman was equally delighted to find a Teen Titans costumer at Anime
Overdose.
