For
fans of Revolutionary Girl Utena, she's known as the original voice of
Anthy. For fans of Sakura Taisen, she's known as the voice of Li
Kouran. For fans at Anime Overdose, the return of actor Yuriko
Fuchizaki was more than enough reason to nearly fill the convention's
largest room. "I definitely liked the shows in which I had a leading
role," Fuchizaki said to the big audience. Through an interpreter,
Fuchizaki said that the keys to Japanese voice acting were timing,
performance and what the interpreter called the "feeling of distance,"
making a conversation sound right if the other person was right in
front of you or a long distance away. When asked about Anthy, the reply
was "Anthy was more like Utena, an active boyish character. For (Tomoko
Kawakami, Utena's original actor) and me it was pretty much a first
time challenge and challenging roles roles to play." To show fans the
nature of the challenge, Fuchizaki had some fans try to add their
voices to a scene from Sakura Taisen.
That
Sakura Taisen show is part of one of the most successful multi-media
franchises at the turn of the new century. "Sakura Taisen was
originally a video game, so I thought I was doing a role in a video
game - but before I knew it, I was on stage dancing." That's because
the plot point of having Sakura Taisen's fighting females double as
performers in a theatrical troupe was so successful that the show's
owners decided to have a real Sakura Taisen stage show, in the pattern
of the Takarazuka and Sailor Moon musicals. "I was truly surprised,"
Fuchizaki said about her experience as a performer in the Sakura Taisen
musicals. "The stage itself is a team effort. I didn't think it would
go more than 2-3 years, but now it's in its eighth year and still
going. People come to see the shows from outside Japan, so it's growing
bigger."
