Most
of the dub roles played by actor Monica Rial lie in her upper vocal
register, but that's left a major part of her voice all but untouched.
Rial has been capable of singing almost in an alto range, and she's
used the lower tones of her voice for a dub role that's unique in her
experience, and a role that could change her career. It's the role of
Jo, the ultimate tough female in Burst Angel, a role that has surprised
even some of Rial's close friends who didn't think she could sound that
way. "It's so awesome," Rial told fans on the opening night of Anime
USA. "It's the closest I will come to being in a super summer action
flick, a Tom Cruise movie. I love that show and I wish that would go on
forever." Unfortunately, it won't. Rial has voiced all of Jo's lines in
Burst Angel, and while she said he mother cried when she finished the
role, voice directors at Funimation, for which Rial recorded the role,
were so impressed that they're giving her more roles with low-pitched
voices.
What
makes Jo a breakthrough role for Rial is the character's toughness and
self-sufficiency, something that's a big part of all of the four female
leads in that action-adventure series. "I like Burst Angel because when
you usually seen anime women, most of them time they're the victims and
need the guy to save them - but it's changing slowly. It's never the
chick saves the world, but this show for me was, here you have four
chicks who are hard core - they can take on the army, they've got it
covered." Rial said she also liked Ugetsu Hakua's daringly sexy
character designs, of which Jo is drawn aggressively strong and
deliberately not large-busted. "It wasn't Evangelion but it was fun
stuff," said Rial. She added that Burst Angel managed to get the mix of
art and story line correct, something that isn't automatic in all anime
series. And Burst Angel is a long, long way from Hello Kitty, another
of Rial's roles.
