There
was a time when fans mistook Fullmetal Alchemist for Full Metal Panic,
figuring the series' similar names meant there was a link between the
shows. One of the people who believed that was Vic Mignogna, who went
into his Alchemist audition not knowing what to expect. Now, Mignogna
(right) has become one of Alchemist's biggest supporters through his
performances of Edward Elric, the series' lead character. "Anyone who
has anything to do with this show loves it," Mignogna said at an
Alchemist panel in Nashville. When hardcore fans learned that
Funimation was going to be releasing Alchemist in English, Mignogna
said "We got a lot of email saying if you wreck this show...but it's in
good hands - everyone involved is crazy about it. Colleen
(Clinkenbeard) and Mike (McFarland), who are directing the show, don't
take anything less than the best. There are a couple of times that when
someone was tracking the show (reviewing dubbed dialogue) and listened
to the voice parts, and said let's go back and do it again." Appearing
at the discussion was Laura Bailey, Tohru Honda in Fruits Basket (and
soon to be Sana in Child's Toy) who voices Lust in Alchemist. "The show
is awesome and the character is so great to play - she gets right up on
the microphone," said Bailey. "It's just how human she is - I like her
because she's sexy. It's fun because I get to have big boobs for a
small amount of time."
Colleen
Clinkenbeard, the aforementioned director (and soon to be Mama in
Child's Toy), also doubles in some Alchemist voice parts, Hawkeye, Rose
and Risa, along with writing the dub scripts. "Risa hasn't quite kicked
in yet so my favorite part is Rose," she said. On directing Alchemist,
Clinkenbeard told how there was an effort to make Mignogna sound
authentically like he was eating food in one scene by getting him
donuts from the company vending machine and having him stuff them in
his mouth...but there was a problem with him having to eat even more
donuts when multiple takes were required, along with the problem of
what Vic should do with the donuts when his mouth got full. And yes,
the ubiquitous Monica Rial has a coupe of roles in Alchemist, including
Lira, about which "I can't say anything other than you will see me
again."
