Caitlin
Glass is moving beyond Winry Rockbell to become a director. The young
actor who played the automail mechanic in the Fullmetal Alchemist dub
has gotten an increasing number of good roles with Funmation, but she
wants to work both sides of the microphone and become a director. "I
thought one day that it might be interesting," Glass said. With the
encouragement of fellow actor Vic Mignogna, Glass asked Justin Cook,
one of the senior directors and performers at Funimation, and that
started her toward the director's chair. She started by directing some
Case Closed episodes, and at the time of Anime USA had started to
direct her first full series at Funimation. "I try not to second-guess
the actors. Instead, ifthe notes don't add up, I'll flat-out tell them
what to do - including a line reading." Glass has learned that the best
way to avoid trouble in the booth is to cast the correct actors for the
roles, in order to get the ensemble feel that the best dubs offer.
It's
not unusual for actors in any medium to complain about directors and
claim they'd be different if they had the chance to direct, but Glass
doesn't feel that way. "I can't say that I complain a lot about
directors and say they're terrible. What I like about it is being able
to communicate with people." Glass is among a youth movement of sorts
at Funimation, which has taken on so many anime series that they've
needed to bolster their dub directing ranks, and have elevated several
actors in their early 20's to directing duty. Sometimes, recording
engineers became dub directors because they listen so closely to so
many voices and can figure out the job, but actors have an advantage in
dub directing. "Because you've been in the booth, you can understand
what they're going through," she said. All of this is a big
acomplishment for someone so young - Glass celebrated her 25th birthday
in the days leading up to Anime USA.
