Dub
actor Vic Mignogna already has been at the heart of one of the hottest
anime series in the U.S., Fullmetal Alchemist, but he almost got to be
part of another hot series. The Edward Elric role in Alchemist has been
Mignogna's biggest role in his dub career, but it's also been the
deepest role. "I think Ed changed me," Mignogna said. "When I started
the series, I knew nothing about Fullmetal Alchemist. I didn't
know what he did in the series. The more I found out about it, the more
excited and enthusiastic I was about it. I think all of the
difficulties and the trials and the tragedies that Ed experiences in
the series couldn't have helped but change me. I'm an only child, and I
really embraced the idea of having a brother in the series, and
whenever I see Aaron Dismuke (Alphonse Elric's dub voice) in the
series, it's like he's my little brother." Mignogna was impressed with
how Funimation went to the expense of bringing in an all-star team of
dub actors for Alchemist, going beyond the pool of Texans they
typically use to bring in performers such as Scott McNeil from
Vancouver. The Alchemist movie, set for theatrical release on Sept. 26,
follows that pattern of quality. "He (dub director Mike McFarland) was
not going to let this movie out without it being the best it could be,"
Mignogna said.
Alchemist's
story of adventure and brotherly love has a power that nearly matches
some of the best tales of the Old Testament, and Mignogna credits the
series' creators for deveoping that kind of story. "That's what it is
that endears fans to it," Mignogna said. "That's why the anime
community is growing. It's so much heavier and impactful, so much
deeper than the Simpsons or cartoony things." Mignogna said Texas
dubbing had progressed to the point it's as good as dubbing in any
other market. Some Texas actors have moved to the east cost or west
coast because
there are more jobs there, but Mignogna also notes there's far more
competition for those roles in those locations because of the larger
numbers of actors. "You can be a big fish in a small pond or a small
fish in a huge
pond," he said.
