When
she's not working at a pizza parlor, you're likely to find Brittney
Karbowski in a recording booth somewhere, usually working on an ADV
Films project. One of her largest recent roles was as Franca, the
bartender and Pirate King daughter in Coyote Ragtime Show. Karbowski
has several scenes with Mister, the lead character played by John
Swazey. The two have a multitude of conversations and arguments,
convincing performances that sound as if they were in the booth at the
same time...but they weren't. ADV uses the system where actors record
their lines separately, so Karbowski and Swazey never worked together
at the same time. Actors often produce their best when they can react
to another actor's performance, and with Coyote Ragtime it was Swazey
who recorded many of his lines first as Mister. "It's just Franca
fighting with Mister, it's not me fighting with John Swazey," said
Karbowski. "It really depends on the director - it's his job to
direct, it's their job to say that you have the right tonation." While
Franca is a good character match for the young Karbowski, who calls
herself "... a ballsy type of person and that's the kind of character I
can put myself into a little bit," she credits director Don Rush with
holding together the complex Coyote Ragtime series.
When
Karbowski appeared at Anime Central in 2006, she was still a theater
major at the University of Houston. In 2007, while she's still an
active dub actor, Karbowski has been out of school, considering a
change in her major and looking for a way to balance her life so she
can keep her grades at a top level. The grades she currently watches
are the reviews for her dub performances, such as Himeko in the high
school comedy Pani Poni Dash. "She talks all the time, she's a spazz,
she's like my own personality, obnoxious. I get to know her more."
Karbowsi's performances have gotten enough attention to inspire her
fans to create a Yahoo discussion group. "I have a tiny following," she
said. "I said that's okay. As long as you tell the truth, I don't mind
whatever you write. I'm part of my own fan group - I don't know how
geeky that was."
