Another
dealer we found which had been at AnimeIowa was Media Blasters, which
had shipped a fresh supply of videos from New York. Media Blasters
expected that Gen Con, with an older audience than anime conventions,
would be one of their busiest shows of the season.
The
heart of Gen Con is its gaming rooms, and to get into the largest
gaming center, you need to pass a Batman sculpture that has become a
famliar feature at the convention.
Right
next to the oversized figure of the all-American hero is an oversized
image of a Japanese hero, which signals the power and strength of what
lies inside the hall.
The
Upper Deck card gaming tournaments were again in this hall, and as in
previous years, the hall's centerpiece was this Yu-Gi-Oh chamber for
that game's tournament finals. It's still significant to consider that
Upper Deck puts Yu-Gi-Oh on the same level as its licensed DC and
Marvel superhero card games. It's also interesting to note that
Konami's name appeared this year on the Yu-Gi-Oh signage.
For
the second year, Gen Con had a small anime show, with panel discussions
and video rooms in the Westin hotel across the street from the
convention center. At the main desk, actor Lauren Goodnight was busy
trying to figure out the location of the frequently-moved gaming
sessions. Goodnight wasn't the only voice actor expected; Stephanie Sheh and Colleen Clinkenbeard also were
expected to be on hand.
