Acting,
regardless of the medium, lets the actor expand and escape from their
own personality. That's one of the reasons that Kaori Nazuka, the
original voice of Eureka in Eureka Seven, became an actor. "When I was
small, I didn't like myself and I wanted to try becoming other people,"
she said through an interpreter at a Sakura Con interview session. "I
have a variety of other personalities that I get to use when I
perform." Through its exposure on the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim,
Eureka may be the best known of those characters, although fans need to
get the home video release to be able to hear Kaori's original
performance. "The role was a a very big role," she said. "It was very
difficult in some ways to do from the beginning to the end. It ended up
being a very close role to work, something I feel deeply about and
connected with." Her second best known role among American fans may be
the various versions of Subaru in the Dot-Hack universes. "From the
anime and games it was quite difficult and the story was quite
complicated. I played three different characters and I had to express
the difference between those characters." Most recently, Nazuka has
been part of the large case of Code Geass, the intense war story. "It
is true that a lot of characters die in Code Geass because there's a
war underway. The actors talk about this among themselves." It's up to
the director to decide who lives and died in Geass, she said.
Nazuka
got her big break thanks to another Sakura Con guest of honor, she
said. That wish to become someone else led her to act in school plays,
where she was noticed by Anime director Akitaroh Daichi, who cast her
in several of his productions, including Grrl Power, Fruits Basket, and
Now and Then, Here and There. "I have my own way of approaching the
roles. The skills came through, and I'm happy to be able to play those
roles." She really enjoyed the Fruits Basket series for its mixture of
comedy and drama. Among series in which she has not appeared, Nazuka
would like to have a role one day in the Detective Conan/Case Closed
series. "It doesn't matter if its not a main character. I wouldn't mind
if I played a girl who was shot," she joked. Nazuka also is a fan of a
series twice as old as she, the Lupin III series. "I loved it when I
was little - I would love to be seduced by Lupin," she said.
