When I was a child, I grew up next to the TV set that showed limited animation Hanna-Barbera cartoons, the lusher Warner Bros. shorts and my favorite, Mighty Mouse. Now, an over-grown adult, I realize those days conditioned me to become a fan of the unique brand of animation produced in Japan. Hoping to have a good time and meet unseen online friends, I hopped on a plane and headed to Atlanta for Anime Weekend Atlanta, the South's leading anime convention held Nov. 14-16,1997. Click on the pictures below to see what happened. | ![]() |
Friday,
Nov. 14: The first AWA panels are held, talking about the state of
fandom and the anime industry. Meanwhile, the opening ceremonies are held,
while the dealer room is packed with the wonders of this special art form. |
Saturday,
Nov. 15: Fans learn how to draw anime and manga, paint cels and build
models of their favorite figures and mecha. Those who already know how
show off their videos and art. The real experts are featured in the day's
big event, the infamous costume contest. |
Rather
than spend Sunday at AWA III, I attended the NAPA 500 NASCAR race. Head
in this direction to see the Winston Cup essays.
After my busy weekend that was split between anime and
automobiles, I had some final thoughts I wanted to share. You can reach
them at this link.
