Ananth
Panagariya and Mohammad Haque -
Anime
Convention
Personalities of the Week - March 2, 2008
Is it possible to like
Apple computers too much? Ananth Panagariya and Mohammad Haque are fans
of the great California computer, and they've set down their Apple
fandom in the Applegeeks
web comic. The story might not reflect
the true lives of Apple otaku because it has several female characters,
but one of those characters has to reflect a computer fan's true
fantasy - Eve, the artificial human made from a Mac. Someone from the
outside might look at Applegeeks and see one of the more
extreme manifestations of the Japanese "OS-Tan" craze, where computer
operating systems are turned into cute female characters -- except that
Eve is a bit different. She doesn't have cat ears like the Japanese
version, and the OS-Tan character never blew up an Apple store like Eve
did (she must have tried the original Lisa). In the real world, Haque
does the drawing and Panagariya does the writing. Somehow, they manage
to come out with two or three online comics each week. "We would start
writing together and work on the layouts and I'd give him criticism,"
Panagariya said at a Katsucon panel where he explained how Applegeeks
is made. "Now, more often, what happens is that I usually do the
writing and then I handle a lot of the business stuff." Despite the
team's attending the University of Maryland, few terrapins have been
spotted in the comic, although there is a prominent squirrel.
