Convention Personality of the Week - March 23, 2008
Imagine the challenge of
making dozens of people sound as if they're in the same room at the
same time and having a big, busy conversation -- even though they're
never together an may have barely met. That's the job that directors
face when they're in charge of anime dubs. Charles Campbell has spent
most of the last decade behind a recording console for ADV Films,
whether as an engineer or a director. His directing break came in 2001
when he was placed in charge of the dub of Nadia and the Secret of
Blue Water, handing that fan favorite at the studio ADV had at the
time in Austin, Texas. "I hope the extra effort we put into the dub
will help give dubs a better name, said Campbell at the 2001 A-Kon
convention. Campbell said he felt justified for all of his work when he
saw how fans reacted when part of the Nadia dub was shown at
Project: A-Kon. Some subtitle fans left right away, but those who
remained liked the show they saw, Campbell said. One child insisted on
staying through the end of the tape, something most adults won't do. At
this writing, Campbell was helming the dub of the unconventional Pumpkin
Scissors, a series where the actors barely know what emotions their
characters will display from episode to episode. "I like to keep a
surprise for the actors," Campbell said about his Pumpkin Scissors
directing style.
