Jay Hickman -
Anime
Convention Personality of the Week - March 25, 2007
One
moment stands out in the memories of those fortunate enough to attend
the Princess Tutu gathering at Ushiko's Block Party. Nanae Katou and
Luci Christian, the Japanese and English-language voices of Tutu's lead
character who often is a duck, quacked at each other to the delight of
a roomful of fans. As great and rare as that moment was, it might not
have happened without the urging of actor Jay Hickman. He was at the
Austin, Texas event because he was also a part of the Tutu dub cast as
Mytho, and his Japanese counterpart, Naoki Yanagi, also was on hand.
Mytho had not been Hickman's only dub role; he had played Shiryu in
Saint Seiya, Eiji in the ADV redub of Megazone 23 and Koji in Generator
Gawl, but Mytho was something special, as was the Tutu gathering.
Realizing that this was a exceptionally rare opportunity with both of
Tutu's lead actors in the room, Hickman spoke up and encouraged Katou
and Christian to engage in a "quack-off," since both actors make duck
noises during much of the series. The voices of Ahiru and Duck realized
what they they had been asked to do, then fell back into their bird
characters and quacked away. We have Hickman to thank for inspiring
that amazing moment.
