Koji Morimoto -
Anime
Convention Personality of the Week - March 30, 2008
In 1996, Koji Morimoto
directed the Magnetic Rose segment of the Memories
animated anthology, using music as a haunted melody that set the stage
for one of the great mood mysteries in animation. A decade later,
Morimoto again explored the power of music when he used Juno Reactor
sounds for the Dimension Bomb segment of the Genius Party
animated anthology. "I feel the images and I feel things from the music
that other people don't feel. Music is the entry for me to search out
the images for my work," said Morimoto. Between those films, he was
part of notable projects such as Tekkon Kinkreet, and helped
bring together the leaders of the creative team that made the
exceptional Mind Game animation. But music has been a major
factor in Morimoto's work for years; he's been considered one of the
best of the music video creators. Before making Dimension Bomb,
Morimoto created videos for star performers such as Ken Ishii, Ayumi
Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru - but his Genius Party work had
a special meaning. "The work contains stylings that I have been
struggling with over the last three years," said Morimoto about his Genius
Party animation. "The agony that I go through that when I try to
create things...I believe that is a kind of light playing off the
feeling and agony that I go through."
