Jessica Boone -
Anime
Convention Personality of the Week - April 22, 2007
Whether
the dub role involves a high school, a multi-dimensional shopping mall
or a fantasy dancing school, Jessica Boone brings a special touch to
her roles. There may be no cuter character in modern Japanese animation
than Chiyo Mihama from Azumanga Daioh. The ten-year-old high school
prodigy was created to be adorable, not a brat, and that increases her
appeal to fans of the series. For a dub actor, it takes a special
balance to appear to be sweet, cute and attractive in the Chiyo role
without stepping over the "pollyanna line," and Boone found that
balance. Boone's acting ability is shown in another major role, Arumi
Asahina in Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. Arumi is two years older
than Chiyo but is written as if she's far older and more mature - most
of the time - and Boone gets that character right, too. Her most
satisfying role may have been the twinPrincess Tutu characters of Rue,
the dance student, and Princess Kraehe, who can't help but be a crow.
Those characters are far older, more mature and intense than Chiyo and
Arumi, and yet Boone knows how to perform the roles.
