Convention Personality of the Week - May 13, 2007
It
was time for a guitarist to sing her songs at the Sakura Con
convention, something this young performer had done many times before
in the Pacific Northwest. However, this was the first time that this
singer has performed before an audience that knew her best as her
acting alter ego, Seras Victoria in the English-language dub of
Hellsing. That made a big difference in K.T. Gray's first appearance at
an anime convention, as she and her work got a reception she could
never have imagined from her club dates. Those small performances
didn't have ballrooms full of people who cheered her acting, as
happened when the Hellsing dub was previewed at the convention. "I was
standing in the convention center and hearing thousands of fans cheer.
I thought `this was crazy.' We had no idea how that was going to work
out," Gray recalled. Those fans always are surprised to learn that,
while Seras speaks with a British accent, Gray isn't British. But Gray
was astonished by the youth and enthusiasm of the Sakura crowd,
especially the number of people who wore Seras costumers. After that
positive experience, Gray said she could hardly wait to take another
trip from the island where she lives and head to another anime
convention in the future. In the meantime, Gray has a web site dedicated to her music.
