Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins -
Anime
Convention Personalities of the Week - June 10, 2007
Few works on the Internet show the power of web comics that Penny Arcade
displays. There are still some people - even some convention organizers
- who don't get it, but there's a legion of online fans who get what
Mike Krahulik draws and Jerry Holkins writes. (There's only a picture
of Krahulik on this page because Holkins had other work during the
interview session at which the picture was taken.) Thanks to Penny
Arcade, Holkins and Krahulik have advanced from being local heroes in
the Pacific Northwest to worldwide heroes for their adventures of Gabe
and Tycho. The hardcore gamers at which Penny Arcade is aimed might
look average from the outside - and there are more of those gamers
every year - but they're different on the inside, and Penny Arcade has
a special way of celebrating those differences. "I don't think that
anyone tries to hide it," Krahulik said. "I don't think it's the same
when I was in high school and I didn't let anyone know that I read
Nintendo Power magazine." Not only does Penny Arcade have its own game,
it has its own gaming convention, the Penny Arcade Expo, that's expected to become one of the largest of its kind in the U.S.
