George Lowe
Anime Convention
Personality of the Week
June 17, 2001
This person may have less to do with anime than any other personality
at anime conventions, but that hasn't stopped him from being popular. People
loved having George Lowe around for his visits to Anime Weekend Atlanta
in 1998 and 2000, even though his greatest roles were on a train and a
Cartoon Network show made up of highlight clips. The train is MARTA, Atlanta's
commuter rail service. MARTA has an automated voice, provided by Lowe.
More people know Lowe from his status as the second voice of Space Ghost.
Gary Owens was the first voice when Space Ghost was a Saturday morning
kiddie cartoon from Hanna-Barbera. Two decades later, after what was was
then called Turner Broadcasting bought the H-B film library, Space Ghost
was rebuilt as a sort of comedy talk show and Lowe was recruited as the
voice as the host and hero. The premise was perfect for a generation that
never would have taken the original shows seriously, and fans enjoyed Lowe's
work.
